‘Tis the week before Christmas
And all through the land;
VCH staff is doing what they can to prepare for what comes,
An onslaught to withstand.
We know through the holidays that health care is busy,
That there is no end in sight;
To the level of demand,
That keeps things working through the night.
But as people start to think of holiday cheer,
Let’s give a thought to those near and dear.
To the family and friends who you don’t always see,
Think kindly of them as it could be worse;
After all, you could be related to me.
The year that is passing,
we should not forget;
Has seen many positives,
And a few things to regret.
VCH saw more patients and clients than ever before,
MRIs, surgeries, home care and more;
Staff and doctors worked hard to keep people moving,
Showing how good VCH is, was a point worth proving.
Of course along with the good,
Came a few things that were bad.
Things that happened;
Things that made us feel sad.
Naloxone, suboxone, hydromorphone and more,
Even with this, overdose numbers continue to soar;
Just no matter how we try,
More seem to die.
But praise to our nurses, our staff on the street,
Who welcome the homeless and addicted on their beat.
Hundreds have died, lives wasted and lost,
But they have saved many more,
Reducing the human cost.
And in the year that is leaving,
The word private is no longer pleasing;
Brian Day is in court,
And Sechelt is still seething.
But think back to 2016 as a year full of hope.
And did we achieve it?
I think of Trump, Aleppo and Black Lives Matter;
My sense is nope.
As the New Year comes upon us,
Many things lie ahead.
Clark seeks re-election and as Canada turns 150,
One thing’s for sure,
VCH will continue to be thrifty.
Our drive to innovate,
To sustain and create;
To promote wellness and health,
Continues to dominate
For the past 15 years,
As all of you know;
The people we serve,
Continue to grow.
But you do what you,
Each and every day;
Which is to provide great care and service,
In every way.
I am so proud to be part of such a team,
All kind of roles;
Doctors, nurses, allied and support staff,
All are kind souls.
So farewell 2016 for 2017 likely won’t be easy,
But one thing is clear;
Regardless of what happens,
It will be one helluva year.
